Home Design Trends 2022

Home Design Trends 2022

Here’s the Michael Robert Construction and Ellie Mroz Design synopsis on what to expect for home design trends in 2022. Don’t want to brag, but we’ve been implementing this way before 2022! Ahead of our time?? Maybe…

MIXED EXTERIOR MATERIALS

Expect to see lots of mixing materials on the home exteriors. Mixing brick (often painted in shades of white), cedar and metals makes each home unique. The trick is getting the right palette and combination to bring your aesthetic to life.

KITCHEN REMAINS A STAR

The kitchen is still the place to be! Expect even bigger dimensions, with savvy connections to the dining room and the living room. Islands are still central to kitchen design. They will continue to serve as a water zone and a breakfast bar, often visually separating the eating area from the living/lounge space.

UNCLUTTERED/MINIMALISTIC LIVING

2022 needs for after the past few years! Homes will reflect this with light woods, clean lines, and floating surfaces. Home spaces will lean toward a less-is-more approach while keeping decor organic and natural.

Zen-living also embraces glass, maximizing natural light and nature in the home, Windows are critical for this to work, And they are making big statements in homes, working to tie together the home’s aesthetic. Large windows, accent windows, black and/or white windows – get ready for light!

For natural light to be at its best, light floors work best to reflect light across the room. It leans towards the minimalistic look. Homes will warm this up with layered, soft textures (look to see lots of boucle and sherpa-like materials).

FLOORS, CEILINGS AND WALLS BECOME STARS

Decorative elements for floors, ceilings and walls will become more prominent architectural trends. Paneling and unique millwork will be used to create unique details and give spaces that extra custom touch.

INDOORS/OUTDOORS ALL YEAR

Terraces, porches, pergolas, patios, balconies…you name it…bringing the outdoors into your home is huge. COVID may have kick-started this trend, but it’s here to stay!

MIXING OLD CLASSICS WITH NEW

We are a huge fan of this next trend — mixing classic, old trends with new ones. This juxtaposition of old favorites set against modern lines creates unique contrasts that can define a home. Combining opposites further emphasizes the character of each of the separate parts, creating visually striking spaces. We use arches to this effect often – an architectural classic gem that, when combined with modern aesthetics, creates unforgettable homes.

NEUTRAL TONES

2022 will see the staying power of a neutral color base, which opens up a range of possibilities for your home. Choose paint colors that complement your raw materials: stone greys, tinted blacks, and off-whites.

BUILT-IN CABINETRY

Built-in cabinetry is on fire! Especially with work-from-home being somewhat institutionalized, built-ins provide custom solutions for families and their unique spaces. Look for different finishes such as reeding.

BLACK ACCENTS

Black accents will be huge, especially against the neutral bases we explored earlier.  Although these accents may come in small doses, they are powerful architectural and interior design tools.
