About This Project

These repeat clients came to us after purchasing a Westfield, NJ classic home built in 1905, on one of Westfield’s most venerable blocks. The MRCxEMD task was to honor and preserve the home’s grand and meticulous architectural design and century-old charming features while making the home suitable for a modern, active family of four and their two dogs. This required creative thinking, and an aesthetic that was both fresh and tied into the home’s traditional roots.
We wanted to connect the front entry to the back of the home, accentuating original stairway windows and creating a straight line of vision throughout the home. Opening up the ceilings, creative lighting placement and selections made this happen.

Floor plan changes included repurposing a sunken den and landing level bedroom, which gave us room for a kitchen expansion, creation of a metal and glass door walk-in pantry (the two critical checkboxes for a nutritionist/chef client!) and relocation of the powder room to build a larger mudroom. The remaining portion of the previous den was repurposed into a patio mudroom (complete with dog washing station) and a powder room. The new expansive kitchen, complete with a full refrigerator and a full freezer, opens up to a light-filled family room and eat-in breakfast nook, both preserved and updated. The butler’s pantry was fully renovated, with tile accentuating its arched ceiling and unique hardware and lighting making this space a showstopper. The area above the new patio mudroom was turned into a roomy laundry room. With no direct car entry into the home, a new carport was constructed in the style of the home exterior, so our clients can now pull up in their cars, protected by the elements and enter directly into the new mudroom. Lastly, the primary bedroom suite was updated for modern living with bathroom and closet renovations.
