Michael Robert Construction is a Westfield firm of remodeling, home building and design people. The same small group sees a project from the first conversation through to the final walk-through, which is the practical reason a client is not handed off between strangers.

Michael R. Mroz
President & CEO
Born and raised in Westfield, Mike has kept strong ties to his hometown, where he lives with his family and runs the business. He leads MRC with a focus on thoughtful building, design intent and accountable execution. In 2009 he co-founded a New Jersey home-energy consulting and renovation company, and that work still shapes how MRC builds an envelope.
Kerry Clifford
Design & Planning
Kerry's architectural foundation — over a decade in residential remodeling — and her expertise in space planning let her take an idea from concept to execution with both function and design in mind. She is often who a prospective client talks to first about scope, feasibility and early construction planning.
Lisa Spirn
Office Manager
Trained in traditional marketing at Unilever and Pfizer, with an undergraduate degree from Cornell and an MBA from NYU, Lisa has always been unwavering about her passion for design and construction projects.

With over 15 years of industry experience, Alex is a master of tiling, carpentry and just about anything to do with building.

Ellie owns and leads Ellie Mroz Design, the residential interior design and furnishings studio MRC works with as MRCxEMD. Its Construction Consulting and Furnishings services are available with either MRC pathway, and we work comfortably with a designer you have already engaged.
Mike and Ellie are married, which is how the two firms came to work together closely — and why the pairing is called MRCxEMD rather than being sold as one company.

Rooted in Westfield since 2005
Michael Robert Construction unofficially began several decades earlier, when Mike took it upon himself to make a number of “improvements” to his Westfield block and his family’s house. Some ended abruptly with a town stop order — apparently ten-year-olds are not qualified to build with high-grade dumpster materials. Others lasted.
The business was founded in 2005 and has stayed in Westfield since, which is less a sentiment than a working method: the towns we build in are the towns we know, and the office is a short drive from most of the job sites.
Mike’s background
Energy work, and why it shows up in the framing
Mike has been building since he was thirteen, starting in his parents’ basement. In 2009 he co-founded Green Energy Improvements, a New Jersey home-performance company he co-owned and ran for about eight years, working on the side of building most homeowners never see: how a house actually loses heat, where air moves through it, and what it costs to run.
That work is unglamorous and it is decided early. Air sealing, insulation detail, where a thermal break lands, how windows and doors are flashed and integrated, whether the HVAC is sized for the house as it will be rather than the house as it was — all of it is settled during framing and rough-ins, behind finishes nobody will see again. It is the part of a renovation that is nearly impossible to improve later without opening the walls a second time.

The practical result for a client is that comfort problems get treated as building problems. A room that never warms up, a second floor that runs hot, a draft at the baseboard after a beautiful renovation — those have causes in the envelope and the mechanical design, and they are cheapest to solve while the walls are open. On a whole-home renovation or an addition, that thinking is already in the room.
After the build

Finishing a project is the start of the relationship rather than the end of it. We stand behind our work with a three-year craftsmanship warranty — three times the one year that is standard in remodeling — and the office stays reachable after the site is clear: project managers are on site daily during construction, and the lines stay open afterwards.

Jack & Liam
Mike and Ellie’s sons, and the firm’s most enthusiastic critics. When the two brothers are not playing football or basketball they can often be found at a demolition site with hammers, offering unsolicited advice about opening up floor plans.
